Eine Kaninchenskulptur des US-Künstlers Jeff Koons hat bei einer Versteigerung in New York einen Rekordpreis erzielt. Wie das Auktionshaus Christie's am Mittwoch (Ortszeit) mitteilte, wurde die Skulptur «Rabbit» eines aufblasbaren Kaninchens aus Edelstahl für 91,1 Millionen Dollar ersteigert.

Damit wurde der bisherige Rekordpreis für das Werk eines lebenden Künstlers erneut übertroffen. Den Rekord hielt zuletzt ein Gemälde des britischen Malers David Hockney. «Portrait of an Artist (Pool with two figures)» war im November, ebenfalls bei Christie's in New York, für rund 90,3 Millionen Dollar versteigert worden.

Die 1,04 Meter Meter hohe Stahlskulptur «Rabbit» ist eines der bekanntesten Werke des US-Künstlers und wurde von Christie's vorab auf 80 Millionen Dollar geschätzt. Sie stammt aus der Sammlung des 2017 verstorbenen US-Verlegers Samuel Irving Newhouse. Ihm gehörte das Verlagshaus Condé Nast, das die Zeitschriften «Vanity Fair», «Vogue» und den «New Yorker» herausgibt.
